The Loft, Queensbury NY
Open all year
Going to Lake George for the weekend seemed like a good idea- we were not busy and the skies was supposed to be clear. But visiting came with two minor disappointments: (1) there was not enough snow for snow showing and (2) all the ice cream shops in Lake George Village were closed for the season (since when does ice cream have a ‘season’?) We therefore settled for (1) hiking and (2) ice cream outside of Lake George Village.
The Loft was a small place with character at the intersection of two major roads (major in Adirondack terms). It is popular for burgers and ice cream, with a full grill menu and both hard and soft ice cream. I went with a butterscotch sundae with soft vanilla ice cream and Don had a peanut-butter caramel sundae – we both were happy with our selections. The patrons before us got burgers – they appeared to be regulars. The patron after us ordered 4 hot fudge sundaes – I guess ice cream is hard to find in this area at this time of year! The owner served us – he was quite friendly and we had a really nice chat with him.

Insomnia Cookies, Hoboken, New Jersey
Open all year
Hoboken, New Jersey has an amazing water-front park with grassy fields, a skateboard park, playgrounds, vistas of NYC and a beautiful walkway along the Hudson River,- a delightful place anytime of year, and great for a New Year’s Day stroll. My favorite spot in the park was a playground designed for older kids that could be navigated by a larger person such as myself (I am just shy of six feet tall) – why are playgrounds always designed for kids anyway?? I was amazed that the kids on the playground were not phased with a 50-something and a 20-something year old woman climbing on the rope structures – they were incredibly friendly – an atmosphere that prevailed throughout the park. Our delightful afternoon in the park became even more delightful when we happened upon a new ice cream shop.
One step into Insomnia Cookies and you know that they have great cookies – the aroma is wonderful. In fact this place specializes in cookies and more importantly ice cream-cookie sandwiches. The small shop was cute with a counter along the window with bar stool seating. As the name implies, they are open late – free delivery until 3:00 am – I guess that they are appealing to the young professionals and students that live in Hoboken – I would be more apt to look for free delivery at 6:00 AM. The help was very friendly and proud of their new shop – they told us that they had been open about two months and today was the first day someone got a free something through their loyal buyer program. It probably took two months because I do not live there. They feature Perry’s Ice Cream which was fresh, creamy and really good. I had Banana Cream Pie and Cookies and Cream ice cream. Don opted for a cookie which he said was great. We plan to return here with larger appetites to try ice-cream cookie sandwiches. This place is worth a visit.
